The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced the fourth phase of its Clean School Bus Program, committing nearly $965 million to promote the use of electric school buses and related charging infrastructure nationwide.
This funding round aims to accelerate the transition to cleaner transportation in the education sector, focusing on reducing emissions and enhancing air quality, especially in regions where children face the highest risk of pollution exposure.

The Clean School Bus Program, established under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, provides $5 billion over five years (2022-2026) to replace existing school buses with zero-emission and low-emission models.
The program aims to accelerate the transition to cleaner transportation options for school buses, which traditionally rely heavily on diesel-powered vehicles.
Highland Electric Fleets, a school bus fleet electrification service provider, has expressed strong support for this new funding round.
Matt Stanberry, VP of Market Development at Highland, stated, “Today’s funding announcement from the EPA will start many school districts on their electrification journey.”
The company has already played a significant role in helping school districts secure approximately $350 million in grants and incentives for fleet electrification projects.

Electric school buses are gaining traction across North America, with the market showing significant growth in recent years.
As of 2023, there were approximately 4,000 electric school buses in operation or on order in the United States and Canada. This represents a small but growing percentage of the total school bus fleet, which consists of around 480,000 vehicles nationwide.
The adoption of electric school buses offers numerous benefits, including reduced greenhouse gas emissions, improved air quality, and potential cost savings for school districts in the long term.
The EPA’s Clean School Bus Program is designed to prioritize low-income, rural, and Tribal communities, ensuring that the benefits of clean transportation are distributed equitably.

School districts interested in applying for the funding can expect support from companies like Highland Electric Fleets, which offers expertise in fleet electrification and has experience navigating the grant application process.
As the transition to electric school buses continues to grow, this latest round of EPA funding represents a significant opportunity for schools to modernize their fleets and contribute to a cleaner, healthier future for students and communities across the country.
