Penske has introduced its inaugural rooftop solar-powered system at its Channahon, Illinois facility, supplying 200 kW of energy to meet 80% of the building’s needs, with the remainder provided by the local utility.

Expansion plans include Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Linden, New Jersey, slated for completion in 2025, furthering Penske’s commitment to sustainability and LEED-aligned building practices.

The benefits of LEED-certified facilities are significant. According to the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED in Motion: Transportation report, implementing LEED strategies in transportation facilities not only improves sustainability but also offers stakeholders a higher return on investment.

Studies have shown LEED-certified buildings reduce operating costs by up to 19% compared to non-certified structures. These savings are critical as the transportation industry, which accounted for 27% of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions in 2015, continues to focus on reducing its environmental impact.

The company’s efforts show how sustainability and profitability can go hand in hand while addressing the industry’s role in mitigating climate change.

Sunrock Partnership Powers California Facilities

Penske has entered into a power purchase agreement with Sunrock Distributed Generation to further its solar footprint. This partnership will retrofit seven additional Penske facilities in California with new photovoltaic solar systems within the next year, generating approximately 600 kW of renewable energy across locations including Fresno, Hayward, La Mirada, National City, Riverside, San Diego, and San Leandro.

ForeFront Power Leads Project Collaboration

Penske has enlisted San Francisco-based ForeFront Power as its lead project consultant to ensure the success of this ambitious project.

Drew Cullen, Senior Vice President of Fuels and Facility Services at Penske, emphasized the importance of this collaboration, stating, “Our solar program is an important piece of our renewable energy strategy, and ForeFront Power continues to be an outstanding partner in helping us bring these projects to fruition.”

Environmental Impact of Penske’s Solar Initiative

On average, four solar panel-powered Penske Truck Leasing facilities are expected to generate approximately 1 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of renewable energy annually. This translates to an emissions reduction of 442 metric tons of CO2 equivalent, comparable to powering 90 homes for an entire year.

Ivet Taneva, Penske’s Vice President of Environmental Affairs, highlighted the multifaceted benefits of this initiative: “The initiative to install solar systems at our locations is a part of our company’s LEED-certified facilities process. Investing in solar has considerable economic impacts for our operations as well as the environmental benefits of further reducing emissions related to electricity use.”

Penske Leads in Sustainable Fleet Management

Penske’s solar energy strategy highlights its role as an environmental leader and innovator in sustainable fleet management solutions. The adoption of solar power in truck leasing and maintenance facilities is a trend likely to grow as companies seek to reduce their carbon footprint and operational costs simultaneously.

This initiative could have ripple effects throughout the supply chain. As Penske reduces its own emissions, it indirectly contributes to lowering the carbon footprint of its clients’ operations, aligning with the growing demand for greener logistics solutions and potentially giving Penske a competitive edge in the market.

Penske’s solar initiative signals a leap forward in sustainable trucking practices, redefining fleet management standards and proving the feasibility of aligning business goals with environmental preservation.
