The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) has released the results of its 2024 International Roadcheck, revealing both improvements and ongoing challenges in commercial motor vehicle safety across North America.
This year’s event, which took place from May 14-16, saw enforcement personnel conduct 48,761 inspections in Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

The International Roadcheck 2024 yielded encouraging results, with 77% of commercial motor vehicles and 95.2% of drivers passing the inspection without any out-of-service violations.
However, inspectors still identified 13,567 vehicle, 2,714 driver, and 163 hazardous materials/dangerous goods out-of-service violations.
The top five vehicle out-of-service violations in the United States reveal a consistent pattern of critical safety issues. Defective service brakes lead the list, accounting for 26.5% of total vehicle out-of-service violations, followed closely by tire issues at 22.1%.
Other brake violations, lighting problems, and cargo securement round out the top five highlighting the need for ongoing vigilance in these areas.
In Canada, similar trends emerge with brake-related issues dominating the list. Other brake violations top the Canadian chart at 29.9%, while defective service brakes come in second at 15.8%.
Cargo securement, tires, and lighting devices complete Canada’s top five violations, underscoring the importance of maintaining vehicle safety across all regions.

Implementing comprehensive fleet management software can significantly reduce these violations through proactive maintenance scheduling, real-time monitoring, and automated reminders.
Fleet management software can trigger timely brake inspections, alert for tire maintenance, and facilitate digital pre-trip checklists for lighting and cargo securement issues.
By centralizing maintenance records and diagnostics, this technology enables operators and technicians to address potential problems before they escalate into violations, improving safety and minimizing costly out-of-service incidents.
The CVSA chose to spotlight tractor protection systems this year due to their crucial role in vehicle safety.
TPS components, including the tractor protection valve, trailer supply valve, and anti-bleed back valve, are vital for safeguarding the tractor’s air supply and preventing air loss when the tractor is disconnected from a trailer or in the event of a trailer breakaway.
Tractor protection systems are often overlooked during routine inspections, despite their critical importance. By focusing on these components, the CVSA aimed to:
Stop losing money, optimize your operations, reduce downtime, and enhance your fleet efficiency with EMDECS.

International Roadcheck is an annual high-visibility, high-volume commercial motor vehicle inspection and regulatory compliance enforcement initiative over three consecutive days across Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
The event is planned and announced in advance, allowing carriers and drivers to prepare accordingly.
While the exact dates for 2025 have not been announced, it typically occurs in May or June each year. During the Roadcheck, CVSA-certified law enforcement personnel conduct North American Standard Level I Inspections, which involve a comprehensive 37-step procedure examining both vehicle components and driver documentation
The focus on tractor protection systems in the International Roadcheck 2024 has likely raised awareness about these safety components.
As the CVSA continues to analyze the 2024 Roadcheck results, the insights gained will inform future safety initiatives and potentially influence the focus areas for upcoming events.
