Austin, Texas & Mountain View, Calif.—Atlas Energy Solutions Inc. and Kodiak Robotics, Inc. have announced a strategic agreement to integrate Kodiak’s cutting-edge autonomous driving technology into Atlas’s fleet of high-capacity trucks. This collaboration aims to revolutionize the delivery of frac sand across the Permian Basin, marking a significant advancement in the field of autonomous trucking.

“Partnering with Atlas will allow us to further enhance our expertise operating a driverless fleet, and demonstrate the safety of our driverless technology as we prepare for on-road operations.” Don Burnette, Founder and CEO, Kodiak Robotics

The companies have already completed their first driverless delivery, a 21-mile journey transporting high-quality frac sand from an Atlas depot to a wellsite in West Texas’s Permian Basin.

This successful trial underscores the potential of autonomous technology to enhance logistics operations in one of the most challenging environments for truck drivers.

Key Highlights of the Agreement

  • Driver-as-a-Service Model: Kodiak will provide its autonomous driving technology to Atlas through a driver-as-a-service licensing agreement. Atlas will own the trucks, while Kodiak will supply the fully redundant, platform-agnostic hardware and software stack designed for scalable driverless deployment.
  • Operational Support: Kodiak will offer operational support services, including remote monitoring from its operations center in Lancaster, Texas.
  • Expansion Plans: Atlas has placed an order for additional Kodiak-equipped driverless trucks. By early next year, the company plans to commence commercial operations with its first two trucks equipped with the Kodiak Driver.
  • 24/7 Operations: The technology is expected to reach 24/7 service for frac sand sites by the end of the year, significantly improving the efficiency and reliability of last-mile delivery solutions in the Permian Basin.

Challenges in the Permian Basin

The Permian Basin’s expansive private lease road network, which spans the Delaware and Midland Basins, presents unique challenges such as dust storms and extreme heat.

These conditions can severely impact visibility and operational efficiency. However, the autonomous trucks equipped with the Kodiak Driver are designed to navigate these harsh conditions effectively.

“It’s incredibly gratifying to have the opportunity to deploy the first real, scalable driverless product, doing the dull, dirty, and dangerous driving jobs that most people don’t want to do.” – Don Burnette, Founder and CEO, Kodiak Robotics

John Turner, CEO of Atlas, highlighted the innovative culture within the company, stating, “Atlas’s partnership with Kodiak is another example of the unique culture of innovation that is pervasive inside our organization.”

Chris Scholla, Chief Supply Chain Officer at Atlas, added, “With average traffic speeds of under 20 MPH on these large swaths of private roads, we can safely deliver a more reliable last-mile solution to our customers in the Permian Basin. This truly represents a step-change in oilfield logistics.”

Don Burnette, Founder & CEO of Kodiak, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, stating,

“Deploying driverless trucks with Atlas marks the beginning of a new era for autonomous vehicles. Our partnership with Atlas will make us the first autonomous semi-truck company to establish commercial driverless operations, and the first company to make autonomous trucking a real business.”

Industry Implications

The collaboration between Atlas and Kodiak is set to make significant strides in the autonomous trucking industry.

Other companies, such as Einride and Gatik, are also pushing boundaries in autonomous vehicle technology, but this partnership positions Kodiak and Atlas at the forefront of commercial driverless operations.
